What is breast surgery?
Breast surgery is a procedure which is performed on a female or male’s breast(s). There are different types of breast surgeries. Some of the common reasons f or breast surgeries are for both Benign & Malignant Breast conditions.
Types of surgery:
- Medical reasons
- Breast Cancer surgery(lumpectomy, mastectomy):It is performed on either part or all of the breast and possibly the nearby lymph nodes are removed to get rid of the cancer.
- For Benign conditions : Microdochectomy , Hadfield’s Procedure , Lumpectomy , Axillary tail excision , I&D of abscess .
Preventive surgery( prophylactic mastectomy) : Sometimes it is necessary to remove breasts in order to prevent breast cancer.
How long does breast surgery last?
The length of the procedure depends on the type of breast surgery. Lumpectomy, for example, takes about 30min to two hours. Cosmetic Breast surgeries, for example, take about three to five hours. The duration of the surgery completely depends upon the types of pathology for which the primary surgery is under taken.
What should I expect after breast surgery?
The doctor/surgeon will monitor you closely after surgery. The patient will have gauze dressings and either a support bra or elastic bandage which will help in minimizing swelling and support the healing breasts. The patient will get instructions and schedule a follow-up appointment.
What are the risks of breast surgery?
- Bleeding.
- Infection.
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation.
- Scarring.
- Pain.
- Needing revision surgery.

What is thyroid disease?
Thyroid disease is a term for a medical condition that keeps the thyroid from making the right amount of hormones. The thyroid typically makes hormones which keep the body functioning normally. There are two types of functional thyroid disease. When the body makes too much thyroid hormone, it can develop a condition called hyperthyroidism. When the body makes too little thyroid hormone, it is called hypothyroidism. Both conditions are serious and need to be treated by the doctor immediately after the symptoms have been detected.
Who is affected by thyroid disease?
Anyone can be affected by thyroid disease, it can be men, women, infants, teenagers and the elderly.
Thyroid condition is very common, having some type of thyroid disorder. A woman is about five to eight times more likely to be diagnosed with a thyroid disease than a man.
Person who has the following conditions is affected by thyroid disease.
- Have a family history of thyroid disease.
- Having a medical condition associated
- Person who is taking a medicine that is high in iodine
- Are older than 50, especially in women.
- Had treatment for a past thyroid condition or cancer or suffering from thyroid condition (thyroidectomy or radiation).
What are the types of Thyroid swellings?
- Benign Conditions Like Colloid Goitre , Multi Nodular Goitre , Thyroid nodule , Thyroid cyst ,Thyroid adenoma, Thyroglossal cyst etc
- Malignant Conditions : Papillary , Follicular & Medullary thyroid cancer.
What common symptoms can happen with Functional thyroid disease?
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are different from each other. Both thyroid conditions are serious and need to be treated by a doctor immediately.
A. Hyperthyroidism symptoms
- Experiencing anxiety
- Having trouble sleeping.
- Losing weight.
- Having muscle weakness and tremors.
- Irregular menstrual periods or having a menstrual cycle has been stopped.
- Feeling sensitive to heat.
- Having vision problems or eye irritation.
B. Hypothyroidism symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Gain weight.
- Experiencing forgetfulness.
- Having frequent and heavy menstrual periods.
- Having dry and coarse hair.
- Having a hoarse voice.
- Experiencing an intolerance to cold temperatures.
C. Local Symptoms :
1. Change in voice
2. Heaviness over the neck
3. Difficulty in swallowing
4. Difficulty in breathing
